Commuter Chat-

27 fellow cyclists this morning. A surprising number for this time of year. I was turning onto Ravelston Dykes before dropping down onto the cycle-path & thought that something like the Hogwart’s Express was coming towards me. But no, it was a fellow cyclist with the brightest light EVER. Much as I am one for being visible, blinding other road users isn’t the way forward.

IMAG1148I took the route from Sighthill to Leith this moring via the canal path. I now appreciate how wide the paths are elsewhere in the city. The veteran canal path users don’t seem to blink as they fly past inches from your handlebars. Another interesting hazard are the slippery little lights embedded into the ground. Do you go over them & lose traction, go to the left into the bushes, or right & hit the oncoming cyclists? Too many questions too early.IMAG1150

cycling in this morning was a breeze.. If you are reading this you must have arrived safely too. Sean was windy-wobbling like a drunk on his way in (nothing unusual there then). I stuck to the cyclepath for safety. Less than 20 fellow cyclists were out in the wind. I’m not really surprised to see numbers so low

Lawnmowers in November?

Commuter chat-
I passed 42 cyclists this morning on another suspiciously mild day. Leaves piling up nicely on the paths in lumpy patches. There was a council transit pick up truck going south on the cyclepath near Craigleith. I stole a glance in the back to see two lawnmowers. eh?

Leaves on the path have been churned into a deep, fine, slippery, mulch of sludge under Great Junction Street, as they are every year. I have mentioned it to Edinburgh council. To be fair to them, they were quite speedy in cleaning it last year.
19 cyclists today all quite well wrapped up.

Lovely to see the council promoting cycling & walking (to the converted). Two things missing from the poster, leaves on the path & a helmet. Now, I’m not one for compulsory helmets, definitely not, the debate is complex & contradictory, but the council should surely land on the slightly safer side for posters?
by the way, 42 cyclists on the path today & I got overtaken 4 times (I’ve been on holiday & put on 2kg)
